From a very young age, Ram Ujagir Gupta, our founder, had a strong passion for becoming a doctor. However, his parents couldn’t afford the course fees, and he had to give up on his dream career. With no other options, Ram started working at his uncle’s small auto parts shop in Kolkata, earning just one rupee per day. He only received extra money when he visited his village in Uttar Pradesh. Ram worked like this for 13 years.
In those 13 years, Ram became an expert in the auto parts business and developed strong relationships with his customers. However, his uncle, the store owner, was not happy about Ram’s progress and feared that he would take over the shop. So, Ram was removed from his job by his own uncle. Imagine being jobless at the age of 40 with a wife and kids who have no idea what’s going on. What would you do?
This is the story of our founder, who faced all these challenges. His only option seemed to be to go back to his village in Uttar Pradesh. However, he made the toughest decision of his life and decided to move to Mumbai, where there were more opportunities and it was the biggest supplier of auto parts at that time. Ram arrived in Mumbai with only 200 rupees in his pocket.
Ram had no idea how things would turn out in Mumbai. Everything was new and unknown to him. He started collecting scrap metal and selling it, as well as selling auto parts from other sellers to customers. He spent some nights in a hotel and others at a business friend’s home. He developed relationships with automobile store owners and mechanics in the area. Even though Ram was barely able to earn money, he never lost hope.
When Ram’s uncle in Kolkata found out about his presence in Mumbai, he bought a shop for Ram in Kurla and asked him to collect auto parts from Mumbai and supply them to him. Ram was not happy with this arrangement but had no choice due to his financial situation. He was still paid very little. However, Ram took a bold step and went against his uncle by using the Kurla shop to start an auto parts business in Mumbai itself without his uncle’s knowledge.
When his uncle found out, he was not happy. Once again, he thought that Ram would take away the ownership of the shop in Kurla. He tried to kick Ram out, but Ram refused to leave. Despite his uncle’s various attempts, Ram didn’t leave. He had worked hard to build his business and wasn’t going to let his uncle take it away from him.
A big conflict ensued between Ram and his uncle over the shop in Kurla. Some of the store owners in the area who knew about the conflict supported Ram. They knew him as a hard-working and honest man who always delivered quality products and services.
In the end, a panchayat was organized in the city to resolve the matter, and it was decided that Ram would get half of the store in Kurla and his uncle would get the other half.
This was the beginning of Gupta Automobiles, our flagship store, which was started in 1984 and is still located in Kurla today. Now there was no tension. Ram became a full-time auto parts retailer. He brought his wife, three kids, and two brothers to Mumbai and taught them everything he knew about the auto parts business. Together they worked hard and upscaled their business.
One interesting thing about the business was that Ram and his brothers sold Jeep spare parts. At that time, there were very no auto parts stores in Kurla that kept Jeep spare parts. Due to this, there was no competition, and they became the go-to store for Jeep spare parts. This helped their business grow.
Ram bought two new auto parts stores for his brothers: one in Panvel and one in Kharghar. When his kids grew up, he taught them everything about the auto parts business. He bought a store for his older son in Vashi, while his younger son operates the Kurla store. His daughter is married and lives in Dadar.
Ram also bought flats for both his brothers and sons. In total, he has purchased eight flats and four stores. The value of these properties has increased over time. If we calculate all of the wealth that our founder, Ram Ujagir Gupta has generated, it’s over 20 crore rupees.
This is the journey of our founder who started at the age of 40 with 200 rupees in his pocket and generated over 20 crore rupees.
Today, we are Gupta Auto Parts, a family-owned and operated business that has been serving the Mumbai area since 1984. We are a leading supplier of automobile parts, especially for Mahindra vehicles, for various models and brands. We have four shops across the city, each with its own specialty and expertise.
• Gupta Automobiles: This is our flagship store, located in Kurla. It is operated by Dinesh Gupta, the youngest son of Ram Ujagir Gupta. He sells all kinds of automobile parts and has a loyal customer base who trusts him for his quality and service.
• Gupta Auto Traders: This is our second store, located in Panvel. It is operated by Lalji Gupta, the younger brother of Ram Ujagir Gupta. He has a reputation for being honest and fair and always gives the best prices to his customers.
• Gupta Motors: This is our third store, located in Kharghar. It is operated by Gopal Gupta, the youngest brother of Ram Ujagir Gupta. He is known for selling the best quality products in the area.
• Aryan Gupta Automobiles: This is our fourth and newest store, located in Vashi. It is operated by Rajesh Gupta, the older son of Ram Ujagir Gupta. He sells modern and advanced automobile parts such as electronic components, sensors, lubricants, etc.
